"Zyzzybalubah might be a little tricky to pronounce, but it shouldn't be difficult to hold in your hand, squish it around a little, and be fascinated with its texture. Listening to Zyzzybalubah is like stepping backwards in time to that special time, pre-adulthood, when insincerity was virtually non-existent. Imagine that. And imagine a halloween album. Well, if life decides to be fair every now and then, Zyzzybalubah shall be chosen to score Pee-Wee Herman's new animated series... And there is Zyzzybalubah, having fun with its very own music-making Rube Goldberg device in its very own playhouse." - Erik Mallo Weltschmerz Waltz

"Listening to Zyzzybalubah's music puts me in my happy place. It reminds me of the soundtrack to my dreams, in which i would walk upon rainbows and look down on a busy town full of little people, then fly a rocket ship to the moon to have tea with extraterrestrials." - freethebirds

"Like new flavors of candy in a melting neon store made just for trippers and other strange and unusual coffee drinkers. The artist Zyzzybalubah has an entire menu of scrumptious music at your findertips. His mixtures of sounds are beyond the commercial meditational crap your Mom gets for her indoor waterfall. This stuff is for serious mind alteration and nightime balloon rides. Not many can get as deep into the recording tracks like this artist can. If your looking for something MORE check out what this dudes got up for sale in his virtual store. You won't regret it!" - Luveiathan & the L.P.O.A.

"Zyzzy has a style of music thats unexplainable. No matter what mood you're in, his music just makes you float into an infinite space while the brightest, most amazing colors engulf you. All of his different projects vary from sound quiet a bit but there all equally amazing. Zyzzy is something you can always enjoy, no matter what you're doing or how you're feeling. Welcome to the world which is Zyzzybalubah!" - Evan.

"There's a lot to be said about Nick's music, and there's a lot that Nick's music says back. It goes everywhere; places that I didn't even know existed until Nick dreamed them up. I feel like maybe life is stuck in a freezeframe when I put on Zyzzybalubah, and I find myself not caring if it ever unfreezes. Except, its not really a freezeframe ... and if it is, there are a lot of bright, colorful, flashing lights and assorted hallucinations involved. Or maybe its a painting. Or maybe its wishing well. Or maybe. Or maaaaaaaaayyyyybbbbeeeee, its everything and nothing. Perfection. and blasphemy. Perfect, wonderful blasphemy." - Emily the Monoromantic

The first time I heard Zyzzybalubah was accidental. I wasn't listening, but I heard. Each individual sound I could pick apart from the total was familiar and real to me. These ingredients didn't pester me, poke fun at me, or make me want to throw my arms up and run. The way the noises and tones and voices blended all into a colorful smiley place made me curious. I wanted to find out what kind of furniture's inside there, to jump and climb on, or just lie on top of. Would I see the faces of people listening right now, on some big wallscreens? Why? Who decided that I need to see all those people? It's okay, I know what to do. I'll turn the walls around, so that the bigface listen-y people are all looking at each other. What will they think?" - Dave the Man

"Zyzzybalubah is the harmony that I perceive within the background of my imaginings. In these imaginings, I am but a translucent figure dancing in a great forest of vibrant colors and pixels, and every creature beside me is upside down and inside out." - Joel Davis

"Zyzzybalubah is a playground where instruments play around in ridiculous ways to create their own fantasy world of psychedelic imagery." - Paul (from Paper Mulberries)

"Zyzzybalubah brings a whole new perspective to music... Psychedelic, meaningful, you just can't get enough. Every time you listen to the CD, you get a new meaning from each song in your mind. Its like a crazy mind adventure." - Cody

"Zyzzybalubah's sound is like when u finally tell someone: i like u. and the person answers: AND I LOVE U!!.. - lido >.<

"Zyzzybalubah - it's the name for the new drug (only for music-lovers), which is gonna blow your mind (and blow some acidic raspberries too!) without hangover, drowsiness, fatigue and all that bad stuff.. but you WILL miss it, because IT IS THE PERFECT DRUG." - (QUTH) (from Poostosh)

"falling down downing, yes zyzzyling me with growing vision, great spring, great ocean, great wave onda orma marasmas. insects. necromancy. wonder. menorah. great sbuff is on in voice. as far far far far far far. -------------far ------------------------far ----------far landscape shining over earthworm." - (b)ananartista orgasmo SBUFF

Zyzzybalubah is only one of my many projects, and under this name, I create music with a balance of experimental/psychedelic/avant garde vs. catchy melodies/pop sensibility.

“Untelligent Life” 2005 Review/Press Release

"There's a thick black line between logic and reality."

We’re fortunate to witness this evolution. I’m talking about Nick Gathany, the force behind this one-man band, Zyzzybalubah. Nick, who just turned 21 in December, released his second album this spring, “Untelligent Life.” It represents a significant progression from Nick’s first release, "Change is the Same," created when he was merely 16 years old. We can only hope for more from Nick as this musical adventure continues.

“Untelligent Life” combines the same vocal versatility of his earlier effort and the same unique lyrical interpretations. (This guy can turn a phrase!) However, the technical progress is apparent to the most casual observer. The songs have a unique sing-along quality, but there are always surprises. It’s not really a “pop” album, but more of an 80-minute (as much as you can fit on a CD) concept album divided in to distinct segments, “A New Life”, “But Life is a Dream” and “Self-Loathing Lifestyle.”

Nick, who believes in the power of lucid dreaming, uses the inspiration of sleep and the unique juxtaposition of life events as inspiration. We explore the futuristic machine vs. man adventures of “The Side-After-Effects,” the pragmatic vision of marriage and life in “The Future’s Flowers,” the dream-like nightmare of “The World’s Largest Coffin,” and then settle on the resolution of "Reprise Prelude." In Nick's words, "The lights are off, but we're all home."

Nick confesses that his music is hard to classify, since he has been influenced by many artists from new age, to programmed music, to hard rock. Also, it is difficult to perform in a live setting, because there are so many computerized effects. His home studio (AKA his bedroom) is his venue for creating these musical handiworks by combining the power of technology with his talented instrumentation and multi-tracking and including a variety of recorded sounds, from chicken farms in Oxford PA to clips from his interview as a youngster on WXPN’s Kids Corner with Cathy O’Connell.

Nick’s unusual perspective on life and music will continue to fascinate us as we look forward to more musical creations and unique interpretations emanating from his home studio.
